Stan Lee, the legendary comics creator who died in November, is getting an all-star tribute event.
Filmmaker and comics fan Kevin Smith, fan-driven investment company Legion M, brand company Agents of Mayhem and Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment are behind the event, which will act as a benefit to The Hero Initiative, the nonprofit that helps aged comic creators in need.
Titled Excelsior! A Stan Lee Celebration, the tribute will take place Jan. 30 at the TCL Chinese Theatre with a public appreciation in the theater’s courtyard and a private tribute inside. A number of tickets will be available to fans for the tribute beginning Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. PT, with proceeds going to Hero Initiative.
The courtyard portion will feature an art exhibit celebrating Lee’s legacy by pop-culture artist Rob Prior, select costumes and props from his cameos and creations, a musical performance and a special moment of remembrance centered around his hand and foot imprints.
In the theater, Smith will host conversations with Star Wars star Mark Hamill, Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld, Batman exec producer Michael Uslan, Daredevil actor Vincent D’Onofrio, hip-hop artist RZA and X-Men and Transformers producer Tom DeSanto. The evening will be rounded off with video tributes and live performances of Stan’s favorite music and poetry. Also in attendance will be Lee’s daughter, J.C. Lee.
“Stan was a unique and unforgettable human being, truly adored worldwide,” said Lee’s POW! Partner, Gill Champion. “He loved coming to work and creating endless new ideas and stories and in spite of his genius he was a relatable and kind man that his admirers could relate to with ease. He will be dearly missed and his legacy will live on now and for many more generations to come.”
POW!, founded by Lee and Champion in 2001, is the owner of the Stan Lee name and the original content he created since 2001, and now sees itself as the guardian of his legacy. “We are honored for this chance for Stan’s fans and friends to come together in a celebration of his remarkable life,” said POW! CEO Scott D. Williams. “Despite his passing, Stan’s name, work and legacy will continue to flourish and be revealed to the world. We are committed to honor Stan’s extraordinary life and work.”
Hero Initiative’s Jim McLauchlin, who knew Lee for decades, said the evening will be in Lee’s spirit: “Stan believed in the ‘golden rule,’ and always went out of his way to make time for others and make their day just a little bit better. I think this tribute is absolutely in that spirit, and a great chance for fans to get together, share their love for Stan, and find strength in that.”
